Samuel Denton

The following is the obituary for  Samuel Denton printed in the ‘Wesleyan Methodist Magazine’ in 1831

It was written by Rev John S Stamp, in a typical style for the period.

“Mr Samuel Denton died at Oxford aged fifty-five years. In early life he resided in London, where he joined the Methodist society. Returning to Oxford, at the expiration of his apprenticeship, he had to encounter much persecution from his relations, in which, however her manifested the spirit and and conduct of the Christian.

He was one of the oldest members and filled for many years the offices of Class-Leader, Steward, and Trustee, in the society. His piety was solid, his integrity unimpeachable.

During the latter part of his life he had to pass through much domestic and personal affliction; he nevertheless, demonstrated the influence of true religion. His sufferings were great, yet ‘the inward man was renewed day by day’.

On the atoning sacrifice of the Redeemer he humbly but confidently relied, saying ‘This will stand, and only this’. As his end approached he displayed much resignation to the divine will, and a lively hope of eternal life.”
