Rev Grainger Hargreaves

1855 - 1923

Rev Grainger Hargreaves was born in Manchester in 1855, and spent the first part of his ministry in China, which he loved deeply. He was Chair of the Oxford District and Superintendent of Wesley Memorial Church for his last 18 years.

He died in 1924, soon after becoming a Supernumerary and moving to Bicester. He was much admired as a missionary, in his churches and across the District.  His Obituary in the ‘Minutes of the Conference’ for 1924 says:

No task was too difficult for this dauntless soul. His strong evangelical preaching, industry, geniality, and unfaltering kindness became a blessing to the circuits of the District.

There is a Grainger Hargreaves memorial plaque in Wesley Memorial Church.  Bicester Methodist Church which was opened in 1927, was at first officially known as  ‘The Grainger Hargreaves Memorial Church’.
