Chris Lane

As a child growing up in Bolton, Chris Lane went to Park Street Methodist Church. His parents were dedicated members and his father had an important financial role in the church.

Chris attended services and Sunday School, but as he confides here, his main recollections are of routine and tedium.

Chris went to Jesus College, Oxford to read Modern Languages and often joined the congregation at Wesley Memorial during his student days. He recalls the ‘fiery and riveting’ preaching of Ben Drewery.

After Oxford, he became a schoolteacher and later moved back to Oxford to teach at St Edward’s. He and his wife Glenda became members of Wesley Mem and in the 1980s, Chris became a steward, then Treasurer and more recently a pastoral visitor. Here he reflects on his relationship with Methodism.
