Islip Sunday School

Sunday School medal for regular attendance
Awarded to Shirley Martin at Islip Methodist Sunday School
Certificate from the 1950s

Islip Methodist chapel had an active Sunday School dating back to at least the early 20th century.

The first group photograph of Sunday School children was taken outside the chapel in about 1917. Can you help us identify anyone in this picture?

The coloured photograph was taken in about 1956 when Mrs Mary Smith was the Sunday School Superintendent.

Regular Sunday School attendance was encouraged and rewards were offered in the form of stamps to go in booklets and medals such as this one.

Children were encouraged to take Scripture Examinations and successful candidates received certificates.

Children were encourage to collect money to help support vulnerable children at home and abroad through JMA.
