Wesleyan Day School, Oxford

R T Shepherd recalls Mr Liddell, Headmaster of the Day School, in the December 1967 edition of the Wesley Memorial Methodist Church newsletter:

My indebtedness to H A Liddell, Headmaster (1892-1925)

Every morning for a whole year prior to the examination he would meet his ‘Scholarship Class’ at 8.30 am for half an hour’s coaching in French and Latin before the regular work of the day Such devotion to his concept of duty to his pupils would perhaps be hard to match in these days.

As a result there was a small but steady stream of scholarship boys from the Wesleyan Higher Grade School – to use its official title in 1914, when I left – on to the then Oxford High School for Boys; and thence in due course to a fuller life which they would possibly never have attained but for Harry Liddell’s devoted encouragement.
