Why keep a package label?

In the archives at Wesley Memorial Church there is a rather surprising item – a torn section of a labelled brown paper package.

The package probably contained printed fliers or hand bills and the label on the brown paper is probably one or part of one of them.

The label reads:

Wesley Memorial Chapel
New Inn Hall Street
on Midsummer Day
Tuesday June 24th 1884
an
Early Morning Service
will be conducted at six o’clock by the
Rev H P Hughes MA
The Service will close at 7 o’clock prompt

Hugh Price Hughes was a young and extremely energetic minster when he came to Oxford in 1881.

The fact that he held services at 6 am, is not only testament to this, but is evidence that he was trying to accommodate ordinary working peoples’ long work hours.

One can only wonder how many people came to the service!
