Kirtlington Methodist Chapel

Kirtlington had been established as a Wesleyan Chapel and opened in 1830. It seceded in 1843, as can be seen from this somewhat partisan report from the Oxford Chronicle.

Extract from the Oxford Chronicle 19th August 1843:

“On Tuesday last a Wesleyan Chapel at Kirtlington was (after considerable enlargement rendered necessary by the increased and increasing state of the congregation) re-opened for divine worship. Two sermons were preached by the Rev. J Langston, and the congregations being too numerous to enter, separate service was conducted in the open air by Mr Sargeant of Oxford, who also continued the opening services on the following Sabbath. The contributions amounted to 16/. 6s. 9d. for the remainder the people are indebted chiefly to the Christian liberality of Mr Wakefield. This is the second Wesleyan schism house opened within a few weeks. Whatever impression Puseyianism may make on Wesleyanism elsewhere, around Oxford it is certainly powerless; people will hear the Methodists, and will call upon them to build chapels, and will furnish them with the necessary funds.”

Located on Bletchingdon Road, the chapel had closed by 1970. The chapel and its adjacent school room has been turned into a house.
