This head and shoulder statue of John Wesley was based on a remodelled design by Enoch Wood produced after Wesley’s death.
It was probably made in Staffordshire in the mid to late 19th Century, when the area was producing many hundreds of thousands of similar items.
The centenary of Wesleyan Methodism in 1839, the continued growth in the Methodist movement and the thirst for such items to furnish homes of Methodists led to a boom in demand. As production stepped up, quality varied.
This item is part of the Methodist Collection at Lincoln College, Oxford.
